The Blue Hills Experience

"We envision healthy and resilient children/youth and families"

For over 44 years we have been at the forefront of providing parents with the knowledge, skills and support they need to raise healthy and happy children.

Blue Hills Child and Family Centre is a not-for-profit community based children’s mental health centre and is governed by a 16 member volunteer Board of Directors.

Blue Hills Child & Family Centre offers a broad range of integrated assessment and therapeutic services for children/youth and their families experiencing intensive and/or chronic mental health issues.

Founded in 1969, we have over 44 years of experience specializing in responding to the social, emotional and behavioural issues that children/youth aged birth to 18 years and their families may face living in York Region. We provide help to families by assisting with parenting challenges and managing family relationships. Many of the parents receiving service need help with child management, parenting skills and building a stronger parent-child relationship. Many of the children/youth we serve have experienced trauma and abuse, domestic violence, family breakdown and other issues that affect their healthy development. These children often experience conflict at school or in childcare, difficulties with peers and family members, and issues related to self regulation, anger management, impulsivity or developmental difficulties. We help children/youth by working with the whole family. We identify each child and family’s unique strengths, needs and challenges. We work with you to uncover your abilities, give you tools to succeed and help you overcome challenges.

We are a participating and, since 1990, an accredited member of Children’s Mental Health Ontario, the first centre to be so honoured in the Province of Ontario. Located on six acres of property in York Region, we serve a rapidly growing and diverse community. We have a toll free number so that families can reach us from anywhere in the Region without incurring long distance charges.

The consequences for children who do not receive adequate treatment and help affect not only them, but all of us. It is estimated that four of five children who need help for mental health problems never receive it and the consequences include incidences of depression, school dropout, juvenile delinquency and substance abuse. Long-term implications that last into adulthood include illiteracy, violence, underemployment and future family breakdown.

Research shows that early intervention is the key to preventing these outcomes. Early intervention can produce significant changes in children’s behaviour, coping skills and self-esteem. Evaluation studies show that we are making a difference, generating positive results for the children and families we serve, and for our community.
